In the 1600s the monks of the St. Bernard Hospice, located between Italy and Switzerland, brought in large dogs to serve to serve as watchdogs and companions. The St. Bernard hospice sits on a 49 mile pass, 8,000 feet above sea level in the Western Alps. In the middle of the 18th century the monks started to realize the St. Bernard's tremendous sense of smell in addition to their ability to discover people stuck deep in the snow.

St. Bernard's ending up serving predominantly as rescue dogs on the Great St. Bernard Pass for the next 150 years. The dogs would work in packs of two to three and would trek the dangerous pass in the winter months saving the lives of travelers stuck in the horrors of winter snow storms.

Unfortunately, in the early 19th century much of the breed died due to a very harsh winter. This was the end of the St. Bernard rescue era, all in all, the breed is credited with staving the lives of over 2,000 people, with the last confirmed rescue being in 1897.
